The making of an all electric EV VW Cabriolet

This blog follows my process of converting a 1992 VW Cabriolet to an electric vehicle. As an EV it is quiet, dependable and has plenty of pep and range to get around town.

The front rack is in!

After the last post I promised the steering rack and motor would be in, which is easy if you wait long enough between posts. The manual steering rack went in without too much of a fight and works great now.

About a month ago the local PBS station KLRU asked to come film an EV conversion in progress for a show they were working on which dealt with global warming and alternative energy and transportation options. That episode of Austin Now is available here. It just turned out the Cabriolet was ready to have the motor dropped in. Much grunting and lifting later it was in! Kudos to the Electroauto folks for the motor mount design, it fit really well.

The KLRU crew also got a lot of film of Mark Farver's MR2 cruising around, and got to share a bit of the EV grin when one of the crew got to drive.

The crew left before we got the drive axles attached, but at the end of the night we hooked a battery up to the motor terminals and the wheels spun, even in the right direction! Last week I sat in the driver's seat and powered the motor from my old starter battery hoping to be able to pull forward in the driveway. Grand total of progress: 4 inches! But there was real movement and battery powered. I just need a few more volts to make things happen.

I got the battery rack in place today, I need to make a few pieces that I can't find as part of the kit. Kudos again to ElectroAuto fitting the battery rack in. It was tight in a lot of spots but fit fantastically.

Just read the entire blog. I know a guy who is selling a 92 Cabrio, and I'm giving it some serious thought, even though I have little mechanical prowess. One issue: I'm in Michigan and I don't know how an EV would function is cold, snowy conditions. I'm looking forward to the next post.

I can attest to the helpfulness of Mike and Shari at Electro Automotive. I'm lucky enough to be in their vicinity and have visited their shop a few times during my own conversion of a 87 Honda civic hatchback. Mike has gone out of his way to help and consult me when I was in doubt and needed guidance. This was one major reason I purchased my kit from them and Mike's knowledge stretches way back to I think 1979!...hes probably seen more conversions than anybody.

EVs actually perform great in cold weather. The motor doesn't mind being cold, there's no engine to warm. Just put the key in and go. Also, many EVs use ceramic heaters which means instant heat! With a remote switch and an afternoon of wiring you could rig the heater to work from the wall socket, and get your car toasty before you get outside.

The one thing to consider in cold weather is the reduced capacity of lead acid batteries. They aren't damaged, just chilled. As long as the range still works for you, EVs are great in cold weather.

Check out http://www.austinev.org/evalbum and search by location. There are EVs all around the country.

You said the manual steering rack in, did you have to switch out from a power steering rack? I'm in the process of converting a 87 Cabrio with power steering and I'm not sure a manual rack will easily switch. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks, Ron wron195722@lycos.com
